Cesc Fabregas turned 19 in May. He is not an imposing looking young man, but he is imposing. When he came into Spain’s match against Tunisia in the second half Monday, his team was down 1-0. When the whistle blew, Spain had earned a 3-1 victory. The first goal was scored when Fabregas fired a wicked shot at the keeper who parried it away. Raul pounced on the rebound. The second was scored when Fabregas played a perfectly weighted ball onto the feet of Fernando Torres who sprinted toward the keeper and shot into the corner. Fabregas once said, “Football is like a rope.” Whatever that means, it must be true.
Spain proved they are a deep team. Three substitutes – Raul, Fabregas, and Joaquin – turned this match. Joaquin was unstoppable on the right. Raul, who had not scored for Spain in nine months, broke his slump with a poacher’s goal. The starter’s are not bad either. Torres is the tournament’s leading scorer with three goals after two games.

Elsewhere Switzerland played a solid match against Togo, winning 2-0. Togo, still in financial turmoil, is eliminated. The Ukraine crushed Saudi Arabia, 4-0, staying in the hunt for the second round.

I think calling the current state of Torres’ head of hair a “style” would be a stretch. It lt looks like it was cut with a blunt hatchet. That said, it provides the Spaniard with a feral sort of energy. It might be fairly called “The Possum” or better a “possum cut.”
